Overdeveloped male breasts may be the result of a number of factors, including genetics and hormonal changes. Male breast reduction (gynecomastia) treats enlarged breasts and makes the chest look more classically masculine.
If you think you might be a candidate, contact Dalton / Chattanooga plastic surgeon Dr. Joel Williams for more information about the procedure. You can reach our practice via email or by calling or texting (706) 278-2700.
It’s also important that the breasts have stopped developing. Some patients may be candidates for hormonal work-up by their primary care physician prior to reduction surgery.
Gynecomastia treatment is often performed at the accredited surgical center of Dr. Williams. The procedure will vary by the patient and his particular needs. Some men have only excess fatty tissue that can be easily removed by liposuction. Other men require the surgical excision of excess glandular breast tissue and skin. If a man wants to reduce the size of his areolas or reposition the nipples higher on the chest, excision is usually necessary. Liposuction and excision may be combined if Dr. Williams feels it is appropriate.
The surgical incisions are made within the natural contours of the breasts, but scars are an inevitable part of surgery. The quality of those scars is influenced by inherent genetic factors.
Male breast reduction patients will feel sore and swollen as they recover from breast reduction surgery. There will be dressings on the incisions and the chest will be bandaged; Dr. Williams may recommend a compression garment as the chest heals. He will also provide specific instructions regarding caring for the incisions, when the stitches can be removed and when it is safe to resume normal activities.
Male breast reduction can help a man feel more comfortable shirtless at the pool or while exercising at the gym. The removal of excess breast tissue can have a significant impact on a man’s self-confidence.
As with any surgery, male breast reduction has some risks, which include loss of sensation, infection, fluid accumulation, excessive bleeding, scarring and asymmetry.
If you are embarrassed because of oversized breasts, take the first step to treating them by contacting Dr. Williams. Call or email Williams Plastic Surgery to schedule a surgical consultation.
